Lovis Foundation Provides Ballistic Protection for Opie, K9 Ypsilanti Police Department

July 8, 2017 in Ypsilanti, Michigan

One of the initiatives of the Lovis Foundation is to provide state of the art ballistic vests for K9 dogs.  The Foundation is honored to give the first donated vest to the Ypsilanti Police Department.  The custom fitted vest supplied by K9 Storm costs $2500 and are guaranteed for life.  They are lightweight and allow the dog to maintain their natural cooling mechanism. The vest can be put on in less than 30 seconds and are built to stop a variety of handgun rounds and bladed weapon attacks.

Logan, a huge Elvis fan and tribute artist, met the Ypsilanti Police Department while attending the Michigan ElvisFest in 2014 and a friendship quickly developed.  Logan was an avid supporter of first responders and participated in the Cincinnati Police Department Explorers program.  When he passed away from complications with pneumonia in 2016, the Ypsilanti Police Department traveled to Cincinnati to provide honor guard for their little friend during the funeral proceedings.

Ypsilanti K9 Police Officer, Brenden Harrison, stated, “We see the darker side of humanity.  Logan’s joy, his laughter, his love, his compassion, and most importantly, his bravery kept us grounded.”

The Lovis Foundation presented the Ypsilanti Police Department with a check for the dog vest during the Michigan ElvisFest.  Giving back to the City of Ypsilanti is exactly what Logan would have wanted.  He had made many friends during the times he came to Ypsi for the festival.  It was one of the highlights of his summer.  We are thrilled to continue Logan’s legacy of making a difference!
